Gallery - Eastern Lakes and Ullswater
The long lake of Ullswater stretches between the villages of Pooley Bridge in the north and Glenridding in the south. Ullswater steamers ply between the two, calling in at the little bay of Howtown. To the south of Glenridding lie the little villages of Patterdale and picturesque Hartsop and the fine lake of Brotherswater. The road up Kirkstone Pass twists up to the Kirkstone Pass Inn. Glenridding is a popular starting point for climbing Helvellyn with its dramatic ridge of Striding Edge. To the east of Ullswater lies the remote Haweswater reservoir, which was built in the 1930's, flooding the little village of Mardale Head. The quiet Lowther Valley lies on the eastern fringe of the Lake District, and has an attractive string of little villages, Askham, Helton and Bampton.
