Gallery - Western Lakes, Wastwater and Ennerdale
The most spectacular mountain scenery lies in the west of the Lake District, where the highest mountain, Scafell Pike towers over Wastwater. Great Gable, with its famous rock climbs is a favourite mountain for many people. Wasdale tiny Church, St Olaf's, has many interesting gravestones of mountaineers, and a lovely small memorial window. Eskdale, to the south of Wasdale is unspoilt. The small village of Boot is near terminus of 'La'al Ratty', a narrow guage railway that starts at Ravenglass on the coast and passes through Eskdale Green. Ennerdale is one of the quietest lakes. Pleasant walks on forestry commission tracks lead along the lake to the remote youth hostel of Black Sail, overlooked by Pillar mountain.
